The No. 22 Pilot Travel Centers Toyota Tundra team had high hopes for Saturday evening's event at Nashville Superspeedway. Though driver Michael Annett had never raced in a NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series event at the 1.33-mile track, his Bill Davis Racing team knew that the rookie would learn quickly, as he has done in
every race in which he has competed this season.
Both of Friday's practice sessions went well for Annett and the No. 22 team. Though the truck's handling started a bit tight, Annett was among the fastest of the 34 competitors scheduled to take part in the event. Thus, crew chief Doug Wolcott made only small changes throughout the day. The 22-year old rookie was in the top
four in both Friday evening practice sessions. After qualifying in the fifth position, the team was optimistic about its chances for success that evening.
The No. 22 Pilot Travel Centers Bill Davis Racing entry took the green flag for the start of the Toyota Tundra 200, and the rookie driver immediately knew something was wrong. Annett's truck was extremely loose during the first several laps of the event, and on lap four of the 150-lap race, Annett's Tundra snapped loose and hit the wall coming out of turn four. Though the team hoped to repair the damage, it became clear once the truck was in the garage area that the team was finished for the day. Wolcott pinpointed the cause of the loose handling condition: too much tape on the nose of the truck, which was left on after qualifying earlier in the day.
The No. 22 Toyota Tundra team has this weekend off before returning to action in the O'Reilly 200 at Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway Wednesday, Aug. 20. The race can be viewed live on SPEED Channel.
